Reading the Bible Through Recovery

Last week we discussed theReading the Bible in Recovery importance of prayer in your addiction journey—and the concept that Advent is a good time to focus on personal, professional, and relational renewal. Alongside the habit of prayer is the daily pursuit of God’s voice through his Word. If you do not currently read your Bible daily, consider allotting five to ten minutes a day to begin a Bible reading plan. God speaks to us through scripture, and daily Bible reading is one of the best paths for discerning what he has planned for you in 2016.

Common Obstacles to Daily Bible Reading

Engaging with scripture takes work, especially at first. If you have yet to establish this habit, these may be the reasons why:

  1.  I don’t know where to start. The Bible is not a seamless story; it’s a collection of books, so sometimes it’s hard to know where to begin. If you are overwhelmed, begin in the New Testament. The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John), which tell the story of Jesus’ life, are a good place to start. Websites and apps like YouVersion also offer a variety of easy-to-follow reading plans.
  2. I don’t understand a lot of the Bible. God has something to say to you every day when you open his book. Don’t get bogged down in dozens of verses. Instead, take a word, a phrase, or a sentence and deconstruct it. Ask yourself, “What does this passage tell me about the character of God? What does this passage tell me about God’s love for me?” Discuss with other Jesus-followers what you are reading and get their insights, as well.
  3. Don’t get discouraged if you miss a day—or a week. Dive back in at the next opportunity. Don’t allow guilt to keep you from spending time with God! He will bless you each time you pick up his Word—and the more often you read, the more you will desire to meet him in scripture each day. Quiet time is a habit that is cultivated over time, and God’s offers you grace as you work toward establishing this habit.
