Rebuilding Your Confidence During Recovery

Rebuilding Your Confidence During Recovery

Addiction recovery can be challenging at times. As part of the healing process, you may need to process old psychological and emotional wounds and learn healthy coping skills for dealing with the stress of everyday life. Working through past issues and developing new coping mechanisms may not be easy, but that investment in time and energy will continue to pay dividends for a lifetime and help rebuild your self confidence.

As part of this journey to freedom from addiction, it’s normal to experience feelings of self-doubt as you relive uncomfortable memories. Though, it’s important to remember that you can actually take advantage of this situation to learn new life skills, hobbies and passions to not only rebuild your self-esteem and confidence, but take it to new heights.

Three Opportunities for Personal Growth During Recovery

  1. Explore volunteer work. Have you ever thought about volunteering in your community? Volunteering your time and energy to a worthy cause not only benefits those in need, but it’s also a great way to feel good about yourself. If you’re looking for a way to get started, take an inventory of your personal values and passions to better understand which non-profit organizations you might want to research for volunteer opportunities.
  2. Take the time to recognize your strengths. As human beings, it’s easy to become overly critical of yourself – second-guessing your life choices and reliving traumatic experiences. That’s why it’s important to take a few minutes each day to praise yourself. Be thankful for the lessons you have learned, the hearts you have touched and the accomplishments you have earned.
  3. Incorporate exercise into your daily routine. Sometimes it’s difficult to go to the gym but the mental and physical rewards of physical exercise are well worth the effort. To increase your physical activity slowly, consider ways you can incorporate exercise into your everyday life. For example, instead of driving to the coffee shop on Saturday mornings, why not walk there instead?

As you heal your mind, body and spirit, invest in yourself and your confidence – celebrate the gifts you have been bestowed. You’re worth it.
